Miasto jest znane z opowieści braci Grimm o szczurołapie (Rattenfänger von Hameln), który z pomocą magicznej muzyki, którą grał na flecie, wyprowadził nawiedzające miasto gryzonie. The city is known because of story, rewritered by Brother Grimmes, about a Pied Piper of Hameln (Rattenfänger von Hameln). The musicien saved the city from the rat plagues - he lured it away with his magic pipe. Unfortunately the people of Hameln refused to pay for his service. As a revange he turned his magic on their children, leading them away as he had the rats.
